One of my non-negotiable staples in my life is my super green smoothie. I believe that drinking a green smoothie every day is the absolute best thing I did for my skin and my health!
There is a lot of controversy out there about which diet is the best diet for ultimate health. Even more frustrating is that whatever side of the argument you are on you can find documentation to support it!
BUT…..The one thing that everyone agrees with….. we should all be eating more greens!
The quickest, easiest and tastiest way to add more greens to our diets is by throwing them in a smoothie.
Green smoothies are not a new concept. There are endless recipes for green smoothies on the web, which is awesome! How could you not love a never ending combination of greens and fruit?
I have made thousands of green smoothies over the years. I have endured all kinds of weird looks and snide comments when seen drinking my green filled mason jar. I always offer a taste to those who stick up their noses. I love the look of surprise on their faces when they realize it actually tastes good AND it’s good for them!!!
If you haven’t made green smoothies a part of your life yet, DO IT!! You will not regret it!
I gave a workshop this past weekend and whipped up my super green smoothie for all the ladies that attended. If you are just beginning to make green smoothies this may not be the one to start with. It has quite a few ingredients so it may take you some time to put it together. If you have the time I urge you to try it. It’s brimming with disease fighting, immune boosting, gut building, glowing skin ingredients. Not to mention it looks pretty too!!
But first, if you are a green smoothie newbie, if you are short on time or if you have little ones tugging at you. Here is a super quick and nutritious version for you. Your little ones might like it too, just don’t tell them about the spinach :).
1-2 cups Almond milk (or any other non dairy version you prefer)
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder (plant based)
1-2 tablespoons nutbutter
2 BIG handfuls of baby spinach (kale, romaine, and swiss chard are good options as well)
Blend well and ENJOY! If it’s too thick just add more milk.
** I use frozen fruit so I don’t have to add ice, which tends to water the smoothie down.
** Buy a bunch of ripe bananas, peel them, break them into thirds, put them in a baggie and freeze.
If you are brave and want to step up your green smoothie game, then this is the recipe for you! This recipe evolved over a couple of months and it is now my green gold standard. I do own a Vitamix Blender which is an investment but it’s so worth it. If you don’t have a super blender then you will need to alter the recipe a bit and blend in batches.
A few things;
All the produce I use is organic. If you are unable to use organic produce, look up the “Dirty Dozen” and at least buy those organic. The produce listed in the Dirty Dozen are the most contaminated when it comes to pesticides.
This recipe makes about 40 ounces of smoothie, which is a lot! I split it into 3 glass mason jars, filling them as full as I can, pop a lid on them and put them in the fridge. Drink them within a day or two. I make my smoothies while I am making dinner, that way they are all ready to go the next day.
I am listing the ingredients in the order that I add them to the blender.
Ok, here you go:
2-3 cups filtered water
1 teaspoon spirulina (or another green powder like wheatgrass)
1 teaspoon tumeric
A few dashes of cinnamon
1 clove of raw garlic (I promise you can’t taste it! Don’t skip it because raw garlic is wonderful for bodies!)
1 pinch of sea salt
1 pinch of pepper
2-3 tablespoons ginger ( I freeze the whole root and then use a microplane to grate it straight into my smoothie- you don’t even need to peel it!)
1 whole lemon (including the peel) chopped in fourths. If you don’t have a super blender, remove the peel.
3 inch piece of cucumber (rough chop)
2 stalks of celery (rough chop)
1 pear OR apple (rough chop)
1/2-1 whole avocado (This make the smoothie really creamy and gives it a great texture. Also, you need the fat in order to get the most out of the fat soluble vitamins like A,D, E and K.)
small handful of parsley (chopped)
1 big handful of micro-greens
1-2 big handfuls of spinach (or kale/swiss chard/romaine)
**** At this point you my have run out of room so go ahead and blend it up, once blended well, you can add in the last ingredient which is……
1 cup frozen pineapple (Add more pineapple if you need a bit more sweetness)
That’s it! You should have a blender filled with the most gorgeous green smoothie you have ever laid eyes on. Revel in how beautiful the color is and know as you sip it that you are doing something so lovely for your body. I hope you love it as much as I do!
Drink up to radiant health and gorgeous skin!!
